{"id":5382,"date":"2012-02-27T18:23:48","date_gmt":"2012-02-27T22:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joyfullyjobless.com\/blog\/?p=5382"},"modified":"2020-10-28T10:02:32","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T14:02:32","slug":"a-library-of-your-own-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joyfullyjobless.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/a-library-of-your-own-3\/","title":{"rendered":"A Library of Your Own"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWhen I have a house of my own,\u201d said a character in Jane Austen\u2019s <strong><em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em><\/strong>, \u201cI shall be quite miserable if I have not an excellent library.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While many of us can\u2019t imagine living without books, housing them can be a problem.\u00a0Even a small collection takes up space and needs to be organized and stored.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you\u2019re ready to turn a pile of books into an orderly and beloved library, here are some guidelines for organizing your collection and building it into something really special.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00b0 Take an inventory of the books you currently own.<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you really want to keep that old college biology book? The forgotten bestseller from 1990?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Your library will serve your needs best when it\u2019s made up of books you truly love. Begin by pruning your collection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Before you give away books you no longer want, check with family members and friends to see if anyone wants to adopt your castoffs.\u00a0Box up unwanted titles and sell them to a used bookdealer or donate them to a literacy project or thrift store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00b0 Organize the books you want to keep.<\/strong>\u00a0 Group books together by subject and alphabetize them by author within each section.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As your library grows, new acquisitions fit naturally and neatly into existing departments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<strong>\u00b0 While family members may have their personal books housed in their bedrooms, ask them to share favorites with everyone.<\/strong> The bookshelves in your home should reflect the reading tastes of the people who live there, not just the adult readers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My daughter has introduced me to wonderful books throughout her life that I would have missed without her recommendation. Sharing a passion for reading should not be just an adult-to-child activity.\u00a0 Sample books that your kids love, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00b0 Keep book notes.<\/strong> Your trips to the bookstore will be more fruitful if you have particular titles in mind to investigate.\u00a0When a friend suggests a book or you read a review or see an author interviewed on television, jot down the title and any other special information about the book\u00a0 you want to remember.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These lists also come in handy at gift-giving time when a friend or family member asks for suggestions for the perfect gift.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00b0<strong> Track down alternative sources of books.<\/strong>\u00a0 Many bookstores rely heavily on new titles, but don\u2019t stock books that were on the scene a year or so ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Library sales, secondhand bookstores, out-of-print search firms and garage sales are all places where you might uncover a treasure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Of course, there are online sources as well. Thriftbooks is a new favorite of mine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many booklovers build visits to great bookstores into their travels, too. If you\u2019re traveling to another part of the country or abroad, investigate the local book scene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00b0<strong> Make a hobby of acquiring a special collection.\u00a0<\/strong> Cookbook libraries are especially popular, but you can have the fun of collecting anything that pleases you. Your friends and family can share in the hunt for new additions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Of course, a specialized collection acquired over the years can become valuable and be sold or donated to a favorite college or library\u2014or passed on as an heirloom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00b0 <strong>Don\u2019t forget the classics. <\/strong>Those wonderful stories that have thrilled readers for generations deserve a spot in your library, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Having the great books on hand will make them accessible to your children.\u00a0 It will also invite you to reread them. Meeting Silas Marner as an adult isn\u2019t at all like meeting him in junior high school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u201cWhen you reread a classic,\u201d says Clifton Fadiman, \u201cyou do not see more in the book than you did before; you see more in you than was there before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00b0<strong> Design a personal reading project.<\/strong>\u00a0 When a friend introduced me to British writer Barbara Pym, I decided to sample one of her stories. I was so enchanted by it that I couldn\u2019t stop until I had read every single book she\u2019d written.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Whether it\u2019s a favorite author or a theme or a new subject that interests you, give yourself the gift of a personally created reading project, one that spans several months or, even,\u00a0 years.
