As you read this issue, think about these insightful words from my daughter Jennie:

I'm feelin' good about 2010. It's got "Takin' Care of Business in a Flash" written all over it.

7 EASY WAYS TO WARM YOUR COCKLES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Barbara at Buckingham This morning it was hard to ignore comments like these on Facebook: Starting the car and waiting in the house while it warms up was standard practice when I lived in Minneapolis. I've never had to do it in Austin. Until today. Good day to find a warm corner and write. Sitting in my home office watching the deer outside my window. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
Seemed like a good time to share some of my favorite ways to warm things up. After all, you can keep growing even when the weather is frightful. You must might need a little extra nudge.
* Do something out of character. There's a lot of talk about authenticity and congruence these days. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it sounds a bit dreary to me. How about you do something wildly (even, authentically) out of character? Go bowling or make a cold call. Research a place you've never thought about visiting. Stop being so predictable. That's precisely what I did when I planned my 2002 birthday party in Las Vegas. Even my travel agent was shocked. "That's the point, " I told her. And look what happened!
* Document your journey. We tend to record and photograph highlights in life-and may miss the real story. When I started my first business, I was working on a tedious project one day and thought, "I should take a picture of this. Someday it will be funny." Alas, I didn't get that magic moment recorded for future amusement. Amazon's Jeff Bezos takes a picture every day. You might start a special diary of your Joyfully Jobless Journey and record events both big and small. (Your biographer will be thrilled to have this material.)
* Pick a theme song. Got nothing special in mind? Try this one. It's the perfect theme for anyone following their own path.
* Make visible progress. One of the challenges of building an enterprise is that it often demands investing time and effort that may not show results for a while. Counteract that with projects where satisfaction comes quickly. Clean out those files, organize your library, scrub something. A tidy desktop can be a spiritual experience. Try it.
* Build some new connections. Invite a group of self-employed friends over for a winter potluck. Find out what all the fuss over social media is about. Write some articles for EzineArticles.com. Check out the offerings in your local community ed. Pick a local cause and volunteer.
* Collect inspiring stories. This is another really useful hobby. As author Philip Pullman reminds us, "Thou shalt not is soon forgotten, but once upon a time lasts forever." Real life stories can inform, illuminate and amuse. Pay a visit to the Get Inspired Project and you'll have dozens of stories to choose from.
* Join me for a teleclass next week. What a fine invention. Don your Snuggie, brew a cup of your favorite tea, grab your favorite pen and notebook, and learn something that can help your business grow--all from the comfort of your home. Two of my most popular teleclasses are coming up and they're both perfect for getting your new year off to a lively start.
