All so very true and quite apt for me as I contemplate at this stage in my life, the finding of a new mini tribe, having been a lone sailor for so long!

Dear Barbara, Your blogs are a pleasure to read! I feel like we're soul sisters... so many of the same inquiries, interests, expressions. I've met Michael Shapiro a couple of times at the Book Passage Travel Writers Conference and, like you, have given much thought to my personal "Sense of Place."

While I have no physical home of my own right now, I must create this within myself, and "be at home" wherever I am. Perhaps we are always "between adventures" – even when we are traveling; as each individual story is set in time and place, with particular characters, and the only constant is the "I," the storyteller, the one living the adventure of being a homemaker or a traveler or however we define ourselves.

The question this blog provokes for me is: how can I stay present, cooking up whatever delights me (with the "ingredients" at hand) to ensure the "kitchen of my mind" is a place that warms and nourishes my soul? Thank you for the inspiration!

I'm right here with you right now! You've given me permission to lose the traditional work eat sleep trap we've found ourselves in after going into 'traditional grown up' mode after returning from Greece several years ago and our last big adventure....I hate trying to act sensibly grown up ~ I coach others NOT to conform and here I am doing it myself and finding both mine and my husbands wings clipped, although he does take to the settling down bit rather more easily than I do.

A deep and wonderful discussion with my son last night prior to reading this had me pondering on a question he posed ...'What do you expect of yourself?' Are you fulfilling your deepest dreams here in this house, in this place?' No I am not! I am frustrated, confused and not at all sure what direction I am going in, but know deeply I need adventures and like minded folk around me...I can adventure on my own but would like to have the gang round to share them.

Well done you ~ thank you again for this I love the phrase 'A place between adventures' so I am going to do some deep dreaming, some creative thinking and decide where would my place between adventures be and what would it look like! Whoppee x x x

Barbara, I just read this out loud to Jennie. We both repeated, "...a kitchen for your mind".
Wow, that's great! We don't have that and we need it. As always, thanks for writing from your heart and striking a chord with us.

sometimes these environments are people related rather than geography, but nonetheless the principle applies.

I've lived in a few different places in the UK, from Cornwall to Cambridge, and I think it's shown me that I thrive more where there are hills and greenery, and Cambridge doesn't quite have the former! I've found my way back to the town where I was born, Southampton, in Hampshire, and that's just as green and bumpy as I like it and my writing is back on track.

So is it the countryside, the house or the people we like? I think the best places contain all three. Then again, it might just be that having control over your environment, especially the little corner of it that you write in, can make all the difference. What did Stephen King say about a 'secret window'?

Thought-provoking article btw! Thank you.

Great article! I hadn't heard of Portfolio Careers before, but it sounds like an interesting idea. And I agree that social networking is important, even if you're not a particularly social person! The Internet affords us so many opportunities for connection that we otherwise wouldn't have. Why waste them?

Excellent article, Barbara. Thank you, so much for sharing.

I love this idea of Portfolio Career. It has more appeal to me than the Multiple Profit Centers. I am speaking to the Houston Chapter of Society of Technical Communicators next month and I was thinking of a clever way to present MPC's to them. I hope you don't mind me stealing this notion.

Half my speech is based on the ideas I learned from you and the other half is the sorties about how I used them. (Not exactly, but you get the gist) Oh, and I'll be mentioning your book throughout, so I can sell more copies from the back of the room for some extra cash to go home with in addition to the Speaking Fees. :-)

What a fine idea, John. I have my office set up so that when I look up from my computer, I always see something that makes my heart sing. One of my favorite things is a sign over my door that says, "There is no such thing as small change."

Barbara,

I bought your book, "making a living without a job" and I enjoyed it very much. I also enjoy your blog very much. The next to last sentence in this post, "Most importantly, make your workspace a place where you love to be..." reminded me of the John Denver albums I have sitting in a closet in a back room in my house. John Denver has always inspired me and he certainly makes my heart sing. I have a perfect spot for them on a wall facing my desk. I am going to hang them on the wall so that I can see them everyday. Thank you for the idea.
